Looking Forward Together: Elders Supports and Services 2024
On May 14, 2024, Elders from the Chehalis, Nisqually, Skokomish, Shoalwater Bay, and Squaxin Island Tribes gathered at the Little Creek Casino Event Center for the Annual SPIPA Event, Looking Forward Together: Elders Supports and Services. With a focus on hearing and vision, two essential aspects of elder well-being.
The event was a hub of local resources aimed at enhancing the health and quality of life for tribal elders. Among the offerings were vision and hearing tests provided by the Lions Club and the Hearing, Speech, and Deaf Center; The Department of Health came to administer Covid vaccines, the Lewis, Mason, Thurston Area Agency on Aging, The Community Health Plan of Washington, The Skokomish Tribal Victims Assistance Program, and the Washington State Health Care Authority.
One of the highlights was Sheila King’s presentation of the Crime Victims Advocacy Network, providing valuable information and support for elders in navigating legal and safety issues. Additionally, a presentation by Tim Smolen from the Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) explaining the process of Medicare benefits for Elders, followed by Yvette Duenas Aponte and student native dancers from Chief Leschi schools captivated the audience with traditional songs and dances, adding a cultural touch to the event.
Elders departed the event with more than just memories. They received a beautiful beaded lanyard they could add to their glasses; Gift bags filled with informative resources and an accordion folder to organize important paperwork; A luggage tag with their tribal logo; Cleaners and holders for eyeglasses and hearing aids,
The success of Looking Forward Together wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the SPIPA staff, who worked to organize and facilitate the day’s activities. Their commitment to supporting elders and tribal community health is second to none.
The Looking Forward Together event served as a testament to the importance of coming together to support elders’ health and well-being. By providing essential services, resources, and a sense of community, the event demonstrated the power of collective efforts in ensuring that elders can look forward to a healthier and more vibrant future.
This event is open to Tribal Elders of the SPIPA Consortia: The Chehalis Tribe, The Nisqually Indian Tribe, The Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, The Skokomish Indian Tribe, and The Squaxin Island Tribe.
