August is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month. Appendix cancer is rare, but learning about it can help people get care sooner.
What Is Appendix Cancer?
The appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine. Appendix cancer happens when abnormal cells grow in the appendix. Many people do not know they have it until they have surgery for appendicitis or another stomach problem.
Signs to Watch For
Symptoms can include:
- Stomach pain
- Bloating or a swollen belly
- Changes in bowel habits
- Pelvic pain
- Unexplained weight changes
- Symptoms that seem like appendicitis (pain in the lower right side of the belly)
Why It Matters
Appendix cancer can be hard to find because its symptoms often look like other health problems. If symptoms do not go away, talk with your healthcare provider. Listening to your body and seeking care early is important.
For Our Communities
Our families and communities are strongest when we take care of our health. Learn the signs, talk with loved ones, and don’t ignore symptoms that persist.
Awareness can save lives.
